National Collective on Male Sexual Victimization

Project Description

The National Collective on Male Sexual Victimization (CNVAM) aims to bring together different actors in order to promote empirical knowledge on male victimization and the practical applications of this knowledge.

Research Project

CNVAM started with the Project Moment'Hommes. This project aims to increase knowledge about the characteristics, realities, difficulties and needs of male victims of Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA). In Quebec, one boy in ten experiences CSA before the age of 18. Higher rates are observed when researchers use measures based on CSA as defined by Canadian laws, which do not require men to self-identify as victims. Given the social taboos associated with this issue, male survivors of CSA take on average more than 40 years to reveal the crimes they have suffered from, and few services are ready to welcome them once they disclose their stories.

Given the critical need for services specifically for this clientele, the TRACE laboratory is involved in setting up and evaluating a committee of researchers, clinicians and community organizations to promote the psycho-relational well-being of male survivors of childhood sexual abuse. The objective of this research project is to document the issues male victims of CSA experience and to document the range of existing practices for male victims of CSA and to test the effectiveness of these services, while working in partnership with the Quebec organizations to improve these services. The project also aims to develop and disseminate material to raise awareness and inform the public about the realities and needs of male victims and to promote networking and information sharing among the various organizations that meet with male CSA victims, researchers, clinicians and the general public.

This project is financed by the Quebec Minister of Justice.
